Actor urges youths to acquire skills to Reduce Unemployment

Kenneth Okonkwo

Dr Kenneth Okonkwo, a Nollywood actor, has urged Nigerian youths to embrace skills to become self-reliant to reduce the high rate of unemployment in the country.

Okonkwo made the call while receiving an ambassadorship certificate from the Committee of Youth on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said jobless Nigerian youth needed to fully engage themselves in skills acquisition programmes in order to be equipped.

He explained that it would help them to set up businesses of their own, generate wealth and become useful to themselves and the society.

According to him, youth skills development is the most potent instrument for poverty reduction and tackling unemployment in Nigeria.

“Try to develop skills apart from the certificate. If you visit the internet now, you will see internationally certificated vocational skills.

“Companies worldwide are now interested in those who have specific skills. One thing about this is that they can do it right in a corner of their houses.

“Youths need to improve on themselves to be employable. They need to learn to also network so that the public can know they are available for such skills,” he said.

The actor, however, advised unemployed youths not to give up on their dreams, saying that not being employed now should not be the end of the road.

He said having received the ambassadorship certificate, the public should expect enlightenment and the value to empower the younger ones.

He advised the CYMS to be consistent in empowering the youth, adding that it would excite him now as an ambassador to the present project by the group.

The Director-General of CYMS, Mr Obinna Nwaka, expressed his appreciation to the partners and the actor for their support and commitment.

Nwaka said the CYMS expected that the ambassador would continue to work with the group and propagate its programme by making himself available whenever needed.

“We believe he can do more than we are expecting from him, that was the reason behind his nomination as the ambassador of the project,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Dubai-based football club, Gulf United FC and CYMS are working on plans to offer both academic and football scholarships to 120 Nigerian youths.

So far, 25 youths have been selected in Abuja by the organisers of the “Study and Play football scholarship empowerment programme project” and shall proceed to Lagos to continue the auditioning.
