Funeral Committee, Abia NUT Hosts Colloquium In Honour Of Late Former President, Chief I. U. Nwokocha


The Committee for the funeral of late former National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Chief I.U. Nwokocha, in conjunction with the Abia State Wing of the NUT, is hosting a special valedictory colloquium in honour of the departed labour leader.

The late Chief Nwokocha, from Umuezu Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, Abia State, served the Nigeria Union of Teachers in various capacities for most of his life, serving as the pioneer Chairman, NUT old Isiala Ngwa Branch (1975-1981); Chairman, Imo State Wing (1985 to 1988); and National President from 1988 to 1991. He was the second Abian to hold the coveted office of NUT President after the late Dr. Alvan Ikoku. He also served as Secretary, Organizations Committee, Abia State Movement – the body that drafted the Abia Charter of Equity. And in recognition of his role as one of the founding fathers of the state, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, in 2017, conferred on him the exclusive Merit Award of ENYI ABIA.

The Colloquium in his honour focuses on ‘Quality Education and Teacher Welfare in Nigeria: Current Realities and Imperatives for Critical Intervention. Veteran educationist and Chief State Secretary, NUT Rivers State Wing, Dr. Okey Nwachukwu shall deliver the Keynote Speech while Comrade Kizito Kalu, Abia State Chairman of the NUT shall be the Chief Host. The Abia State Commissioner for Education (Post-Basic), Hon. Ukwu Rocks Emma shall be the Special Guest of Honour. Other key education sector stakeholders expected at the Colloquium include the Executive Chairman, Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Elder Okey Ananaba; Executive Secretary, Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB); Coordinator, National Teachers Institute, Abia State, and a host of others.

The Colloquium holds today, Tuesday November 30, 2021 at the Abia Teachers’ House, House of Assembly Road, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia. Time is 11:00AM.
