Hon. Uko Nkole Clocks 43: Celebrating a Legislator Per Excellence and His Achievements…
43 years ago, an outstanding successful politician, who began humble, rose with a remarkable speed of light to the limelight of eminence and excellence, an enterprising political icon, was born to achieve greatness, who really found favour with God, that God decided to bring him to the forecourt of eminence, via politics, even when he least envisaged he was going to be a partisan politician, and ever since God took that favoured decision on him, to make him a great politician, it has been absolutely difficult for the searchlight on him to grow dim.
Born to the family of Chief and Late Mrs. Ndukwe Uko Nkole of Ozu Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State on the 20th of October, 1975.
Hon. Nkole is a graduate of the famous University of Nigeria, Nsukka with a BSc. (Hons.) in Geography. During his one year compulsory National Youth Service Corps, (NYSC), he served at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Minna Branch.
In Furtherance of his quest for academic excellent, he obtained a post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Urban and Regional Planning and Advance Certificate in Marketing, Alumnus of RIPA – London. He is a registered and practicing Town Planner.
Before bowing to the pressure to serve his fatherland as a Federal Lawmaker, he worked as a Principal Town Planner in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
He served as the Secretary, Inter Departmental Committee on Flood Disaster in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and also Secretary, Presidential Committee on International Seminars/ Conferences of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners.
Hon. Nkole Uko Ndukwe is a member of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to represent the good People of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the 8th National Assembly of the Fourth Republic.
Currently, he is a member of the following committees in the Nigerian House of Representatives: Appropriation, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Public Accounts, Public Service Matters, Urban and Regional Planning, Navy, Drugs and Narcotics, Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Governmental Affairs.
A widely Travelled adventurer, He is excellently endowed with interpersonal and communication skills, personal mentoring abilities, team player with good working relationship and target oriented service delivery.
Uko Nkole is specially carved to work in a multi-cultural environment with the ability to adapt easily to a dynamic work environment.
The peoples general, Uko Nkole is a motivator, respectful, tolerant and pragmatic in approach to issues. He is experienced in the built Environment, business and Banking Sectors in Nigeria coupled with his can-do attitude while meeting tight schedules and ensuring high quality results.
As a God fearing man, his personal interest is to affect his generation positively through physical, moral, financial and spiritual support especially to the less privileged; and to learn from more informed Personalities in humanity in order to facilitate the development of the Nigeria’s great people and humanity in general.
As a legislator and within 3 years of being at the National Assembly Hon. Uko Nkole has carved a niche for himself and has remained positively on the life of not just his constituents but Abians at large who have witnessed how effectively he has represented his people.
It is true that the Primary responsibility of a legislator is law making, but Hon. Nkole has so perfectly combined it with a tremendous delivery of projects that he earned for himself the sobriquet Mr. Project.
In the area of capital projects, Hon. Uko Nkole has within these 3 years attracted 9 water projects in:
Ndi Okereke Abam, Ibina Ohafia, Amuvi Arochukwu, Ebem Ohafia, Elu Ohafia, Abiriba, Umuzomgbo Ihechiowa and Amuke Ohafia, attracted the Federal Government attention to fund the abandoned Asaga water scheme; most of them have been completed while a few are in advanced stages of completion.
Hon. Nkole has also within the past 3 years attracted the rehabilitation and construction of 5 bridges, which include rehabilitation of:
Anyim Bridge which links Abia to Akwa Ibom State in Atan Abam, completed in 2016,
Rehabilitation of Afagala bridge, Idima Abam, completed in 2016,
Ongoing rehabilitation of Ndi Ebe Abam Barley Bridge, Palliative repairs of Nmuri Bridge, Ebem Ohafia and the inclusion of reconstruction in 2018 budget, and the ongoing construction of Arochukwu/Ohafia Bridge (Omenuko Bridge at Igwu River, Ozu Abam).
He has also embarked on the construction of one bedroom apartment each for two widows in Ndi Ememe Abam and at Mgbaga, Ebem Ohafia including the completion of a 5 bedroom Corpers lodge from lintel level, a project embarked upon by the Amuru Abam Women in 2017.
He has also tiled the Auditorium of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria in Ameke Abam, the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Ndi Oji Abam and the renovation of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Atan Abam to give it a facelift and has donated 100 bags of cement for palliative works on drainage in Elu Ohafia.
In the health sector, Hon. Nkole has done creditably well. He has rehabilitated the Ndi Ememe Abam Primary Health Centre completed in 2016 and has been equipped. There is the ongoing construction of Primary Health Centre in Amanta, Abiriba; procurement of drugs and health equipment distributed to General Hospitals and health centers within the constituency; namely: Ututu Cottage Hospital Ututu, Ndi Ememe PHC, Ndi Ebe Abam PHC, Amuru Abam PHC, Ozu Abam PHC, Ania PHC ,payment of hospital bills for some indigent patients and also supported financially the CHAMA free Medical Scheme in 2015/2016 for patients who underwent surgery.
In Education, Hon. Nkole has blazed a trail.
He has attracted a solar based E-learning center with over 40 computer sets at Abam High School Ozu Abam, provided school desks and exercise books for 4 schools namely Ofali Agwu Community School, Amaekpu Ohafia, Amaogudu Community School, Abiriba, Amamba/Ukpo Community School Abiriba, Nkporo Comprehensive Secondary School Nkporo. He has also embarked on the ongoing construction of 5 classroom blocks in Amankwu Ohafia, Construction of Administrative block for Nkporo Comprehensive Secondary School, Construction of 5 Classroom block and a laboratory for Obiene Technical School Ututu; Construction of Six Classroom block in partnership with CHAMA (a Canadian based NGO) at Ndi Aku Ohafia, a village in Ohafia that has existed for over 100 years without any elementary school and the registration of first school leaving certificate exam for over 600 indigent pupils in 23 schools in his constituency.
In the area of electricity, apart from donating and installation of transformers to his constituents; viz Timber Shade Ebem, Hospital road, Elu, Abam, Isiama Layout, Amaekpu, Akanu Ohafia, etc., Hon. Nkole has embarked on power enhancement for Ndi Ememe Odonyi College road Abam; enhancement of electricity with a sub-station within the premises of Hope Waddell University and her precinct in Okagwe Ohafia, restoration of light in Ndi Ibe and Oboro Ohafia; installation of street lights in Okagwe, Oboro and Nkwebi Ohafia; Provision of low tension cables to support rural electrification in Ndi Okpo Ihechiowa including provision and installation of a 33KVA transformer for Atan Abam community that has been for 9 years without electricity.
In terms of road construction Hon. Nkole attracted the ongoing construction of Bende-Idima Abam road, Amaukabi 1km road in Amangwu Ohafia which is 90% completion, Payment of counterpart fund Okon-Aku Ohafia community to enable Abia State Community Social Development Programme (AB-CSDP) rehabilitates the Amafia road in Okon-Aku Ohafia, Influenced the return to site of the contractor handling the ongoing rehabilitation of the Arochukwu- Ohafia- Abiriba federal road, Beks Kimse Nigeria Limited, Attracted the ongoing repairs of Phase 11 and rehabilitation of the Umuahia-Bende- Abam- Ohafia federal road by the Federal Government, Abiriba-Nkporo-Ohafia road currently under execution by the Federal Ministry of Works with the project scope : Abiriba through Amurie-Etitiama-Elughu Nkporo-Nguzu Junction, Ohafia, Inclusion of the rehabilitation of Parachute-Okagwe road, Facilitated the return to site of the contractor handling the Eziafor Ohafia-Biakpan road project by NDDC and Nominated the construction of Okagwe-Osso Edda road that will connect Ohafia and Ebonyi State which he is working out in synergy with Senator Sonni Ogbuoji from Ebonyi State.
In addition, Hon. Nkole has equipped skill acquisition Centres and individuals with sewing machines, motorcycles and grants to support small scale business; donated buses to National Union of Road Transport Ohafia; Abam Council of Ndi Eze ogo and vehicles to individuals and PDP State leaders including the introduction of an E GO GO AGAIN BUS SHUTTLE SCHEME for his constituency.
To further reduce unemployment within his constituency, Hon. Nkole has facilitated the employment of over 150 persons in the Federal Civil Service and more than 21 persons have also been enlisted into the Nigerian Navy through him.
In the words of the Former President of the United States John F. Kennedy, he opines thus, Each time a man stands up for an Ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustices, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
Of course, Hon. Uko has interest to legislate for city planning, urban development, equity and justice, environmental protection, planning and management.
As a federal law maker, he has sponsored bills and motions in the following areas;
i) A Bill for An Act CAP F17 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to establish the Federal Polytechnic, Abiriba which has scaled through public hearing stage and due for third reading
ii) Motion on the deplorable condition of Arochukwu-Ohafia Road in Abia State.
iii) Motion on threating gully Erosion in Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in Abia State.
iv) Motion to mandate the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration to Restructure the Park and Pay Policies in line with the Best practices
v) Motion on the Abandonment of Nkporo-Abiriba-Ohafia Road.
vi) Motion on Urgent need for intervention to resuscitate the 132/33 KV Arochukwu Electricity, substation.
vii) Motion on Urgent need for the continued voters Registration Exercise to be conducted in ward and Registration units Nationwide.
viii) Urgent need for intervention to address the Emergency Humanitarian situation at Ndi Ibe Ohafia, Amibe Ezioke Ward in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
ix) Urgent need to address the subversion of due process and outright corruption by the management of Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC).
x) Motion on the need for the Federal Ministry of Education to regularize the appointments of teachers employed by the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the Federal Government College Ohafia, Abia State and all other affected Federal Government Colleges Nationwide.
xi) Motion on the need for the Executive Arm of Government to look into the over population and dilapidated structures of National Youths Service Corps and Orientation Camps in the states of the federation.
xii) A bill for an Act to Establish the Federal College of Agriculture Abam in Arochukwu LGA which is on the process
