The Ohafia Local government Chairman, Dr. Okorafor Ukiwe has called on federal government to quickly intervene on the already awarded Nmuri bridge to avert impending tragedy and to ease the sufferings of road users.
The chairman made the call this morning when news about a Trailer load of cement that got stuck on sinking Nmuri bridge filtered in.
The LGA boss advised road users to consider alternate routes as efforts are being made to evacuate the trailer.
Recall that the contractor mobilized to reconstruct Nmuri bridge by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, was chased off the site by Setraco a couple of weeks ago.
According to Setraco, the contract to reconstruct Nmuri bridge has been awarded to them by Federal govt.
Meanwhile, the LGA boss has drawn the attention of the Honorable member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency, Hon. Uko Nkole to the urgent need to ensure the contractors reportedly handling the Nmuri bridge contract begin work immediately.
It’s a shorter route to Ohafia from Umuahia-Bende -Abam..
This morning the news of a trailer stuck on the bridge has gone viral..
This is to properly put thing in the right perspective
Abia State Government had approved the reconstruction of a new bridge at Nmuri. Governor Ikpeazu made the promise at the burial of Chief Nkole, father of the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency when the dilapidated nature of th bridge was brought to his attention.
Before fund was mobilized in January, The Deputy Speaker of Abia Assembly Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu who also hails from Ohafia moved to construct a new bridge close to the old Nmuri bridge to give room for the State Government to commence work on the old one and make it a double bridge..
Just as contractors were mobilized to site, Soldiers claiming to act on the order of Setraco came and dispersed the contractors with a stern warning never to come close to Nmuri as the bridge was already part of a FG contract awarded to them on the Federal road
Hon. Uko Nkole corroborated the story and asked ndi Ohafia to allow Federal Government to handle the bridge which according to him is part of the rehabilitation of Bende-Ohafia road.
However, that petty act did not go down well with Ohafia people, as they wondered why FG and Setraco waited for State intervention before coming to show interest.
Recall that similar drama happened at Igu bridge in Abam which has made the bridge remain unattended to. For three years, Hon. Nkole and Sen. Ohuabunwa disagreed over who attracted the reconstruction of the bridge. Since then, even after Sen. has left the Stage, Igu bridge has suffered total neglect
Ohafia people have warned that such petty egocentric politics that played at Igu bridge which left it worse than it was, should not be witnessed at Nmuri..
On that note, they gave Setraco 2 months to commence reconstruction of the bridge or step aside for the State Government to handle..
Hon. Nkole has been properly notified on the resolution of Ohafia people.
